Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972, located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Since she was the only child Scott was also raised through her maternal grandparents. Scott graduated from her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she attended Temple University. Scott completed her secondary school education while also working at two jobs. She was hoping to be a English teacher in high school. After three years as a teacher's aide and studying her goal of becoming a high-school English teacher came to a halt. After starting her career performing at live poetry performances and eventually, she teamed up with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their collaborative song was written by the duo. During an Roots show she was spotted to be an artist. After that, she got collaborations which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She also gained experience in performing through the Canada tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was contracted to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
